Change Log – A list of the modifications made to this Glossary.

Cookie – A small file consisting of a name-value pair (state=”ny”) that may be sent to your browser when you access one of our web pages. Your browser will place the file on your computer and then send us the file each and every time you request one of our web pages. It doesn't matter which one of our web pages is requested. The stored cookie will always be sent. The cookie could allow us to automatically display the information you last requested the next time you visit lottery.us.

COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) –

Email (Electronic Mail) – Mail message that can be delivered using the internet.

Encryption – scrambling information so that it can not be read without proper authorization.

Geolocation – your real world location could be identified by your IP address, cellphone, GPS device, etc.

IP Address – All the devices (computers, printers, …) hooked up to the internet are assigned a numerical identifier that provides the same function as a mailing address. When you request the home page at Google your browser asks the internet's domain name system what IP address (64.233.169.147) is associated with google.com. Your browser then places both google's IP address (where you want the web page request sent) and your computer's IP address (the return address) into the internet's version of an envelope, one or more data packets. Google's IP address tells the linked computers on the internet where to route the request data packet(s). Google's computer then creates data packets that list your IP address as where it's home page should be sent. The linked computers on the internet use your IP address to route Google's home page back to your computer; where your browser reassembles and displays Google's home page to you.

Local storage – The latest and greatest way of storing cookies on your computer. Unlike cookies, the information is not automatically sent to us with each web page request.

Metadata – Data that describes other data.

Name-Value pair – data representation used in the cookies we create to store your personal preferences. “state”=”ny”, “textsize”=”l”.

Privacy Policy – document that relates how a service provider collects and uses information (data) about its users¹.

Server logs – file(s) containing history of web page requests at lottery.us. For each web page request the following information might be stored: client IP address, timestamp, web page requested, HTTP code, bytes served, user agent (i.e., the name of your browser), referrer (web page that hyperlinked to web page requested)².

Snowbird – A person who lives in a northern state in the summer, and a southern state in the winter.

Terms of Service – document that sets out the rules that users have to follow when using a website or app³.

Website,Site – set of related web pages served from a single web domain⁴. For example; lottery.us.
